Hi, I'm Marina!

I'm a freelance linguist who cares a lot.

Marina, a Catalan and Spanish Translator, sitting under blossoming cherry trees.

I’m an award-winning translator and subtitler working from English and Japanese into my native Catalan and Spanish.

I specialise in the fields of cultural media and sustainability training. I use my subtitling skills and passion for inclusive language to work towards a more accessible and inclusive world.

A Catalan and Spanish translator with a background in Japanese Studies

I hold a BA in East Asian Studies by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. During the course of the degree, I studied at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto for a year.

Thanks to my studies and experience of living in Japan, I am a professional you can trust to convey the meaning of a Japanese text into the target language accurately as well as fluently.

Professional subtitling
(including spotting!)

I trained as a professional subtitler during my MA in Audiovisual Translation Studies at the University of Leeds.

I provide frame-accurate time-coded subtitles, including captions for deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences.

My subtitles follow target-country guidelines and I keep abreast of the latest research on how viewers process subtitled text. I can make sure that the subtitles I provide are perfectly suited to the target audience.

  • Associate member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) as well as member of two of its networks:
    • Yorkshire Translators and Interpreters (YTI)
    • Sustainability, Horticulture, Environment and Agriculture Network (SHEA)

I abide by the Codes of Professional Conduct of these professional bodies, and I am committed to continuous professional development.

Rest assured that your translations are in good hands!

Human-powered translations
for peace of mind

My translations are 100% human. This means you can trust my work to be free from copyright issues or clunky word-for-word equivalents.

I do like technology: I use subtitling software and computer assisted translation tools with translation memories and termbases, which help me keep my translations consistent.

However, I make very scant use of machine translation and AI due to its negative impact on quality and its ethical and environmental concerns. You can find out more in my AI policy.

Making a difference

I firmly believe that language services play a key role in making the world a better place by enabling communication between people. Understanding each other is more important than ever in the face of the climate crisis and rising inequalities.

My mission is to put my skills to good use and add my grain of sand to achieve a fairer and greener world, in line with my values of sustainability and respect for all living beings.

Check out my sustainability policy to find out how I put those values into practice.
